“Suspended Childhood” Teach-In on the School-to-Prison Pipeline
The Excellence and Advancement Foundation<http://breakthepipeline.com/> and Texas Appleseed<https://www.texasappleseed.org/> are sponsoring a teach-in on the school-to-prison pipeline and practices in AISD schools.
Texas elementary schoolchildren are suspended, sent to alternative schools, and expelled at alarming rates, often for minor Student Code of Conduct violations such as horseplay, disruption of class, or dress code violations. During the 2013-2014 school year, almost half of all suspensions in Texas were issued to PK-2nd grade students, removals that are not required under state law and are at teachers’ discretion. And school districts have the ability to create their own student codes of conduct that go well beyond the state law, allowing suspensions of young students for normal, age-appropriate behavior.

Eating While Young and Black: Dispatches from a Gentrifying City
It's time for a fresh story. In Austin and in cities across the United States, Black youth and their families face gentrification, outmigration, displacement, and rebuilding. But their food experiences are often represented without this context and without young Black voices. RSVP<http://eatingwhileyoungandblack.eventbrite.com> for an opening performance and interactive talk that explores representations of eating while young and Black, their impact, and why shifting the narrative matters now. Interwoven with clips from *Eating While Young and Black*, a 4-year multimedia project with African-American and Afro-Latinx youth from Austin, Texas. Performance by Xavier Clark, with interactive talk by Dr. Naya Armendarez Jones of Food for Black Thought<http://www.foodforblackthought.com/>.
Free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30, event begins at 7 pm. Seating is limited. RSVP on Eventbrite<http://eatingwhileyoungandblack.eventbrite.com>.
Location: Huston-Tillotson University, Agard-Lovinggood Auditorium, 900 Chicon St, Austin, TX 78702

“Coming to Voice” Workshop on Women in Religion
The Women Ministers’ Empowerment Network (WMEN), a progressive ministerial alliance in the Austin area, is planning the “Coming to Voice” Conference in collaboration with WomanPreach<http://womanpreach.org/>!, a national group that nurtures female preachers and promotes Womanist/Feminist concerns for justice. In plenary sessions, workshops, and small group discussions over two days, the group will foster dialogue on issues specific to women of color in ministry, part of an ongoing project to build ministerial relationships for women of color for training, encouragement, and support. The program will also be valuable for others concerned about social justice and equity in religious organizations.
Dr. Margaret Aymer<https://austinseminary.academia.edu/MargaretAymer> will serve as the workshop’s Wisdom Conversation Partner. Aymer, an Associate Professor at Austin Seminary, has worked at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta and is active in the Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion. She is the author of James: Diaspora Rhetorics of a Friend of God and First Pure, then Peaceable: Frederick Douglass, Darkness and the Epistle of James.
Rev. Dr. Valerie Bridgeman<http://www.mtso.edu/about-mtso/faculty-directory/valerie-bridgeman/> will serve as Lead Facilitator. Bridgeman is a Visiting Professor of Homiletics and Hebrew Bible at Methodist Theological School in Ohio and president and CEO of WomanPreach!, which is committed to training women called to preach who emerge from churches and academic institutions that can be insensitive or inhospitable to their vocation and voice. She is co-editor of Those Preaching Women: A Multicultural Collection and The Africana Worship Book.
The event is open to everyone interested in these issues, clergy and the public, and there is a fee. Registration online<https://www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?EventID=1820081>.
